Valerie Syposz began printmaking as part of an intensive visual arts program in high school, and has been working with this medium ever since. She is inspired by the equal importance of the technical and artistic aspects of the process, as well as by the unique aesthetics of each type of printmaking.

Valerie has always been inspired by direct observation and experience of her physical surroundings. Through her relocation spanning different countries, her images slowly transformed from portrayals of objective reality into more subjective depictions. Starting from life drawing sketches, Valerie lets each image develop intuitively, first by drawing and then throughout the carving and printing process. Ultimately, she aims to create a series of bizarre portraits that reflect on human existence and the perception of self.

Valerie Syposz was born in Ottawa, Canada, and received a BFA in painting and drawing from Concordia University in 2008. She moved to Japan in 2010 after being selected as a Monbukagakusho scholar recipient. She received a MFA in printmaking from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. Valerie continues to focus her creation on printmaking in many forms, usually with hand printed techniques. She is an award-winning artist and has held solo exhibitions in Canada, Japan, Australia, Norway and Korea. Valerie has also participated in numerous group exhibitions and artist-in-residence programs around the world.
