Q：今井さんは、様々なところで個展を開催しており、大活躍でいらっしゃいますね。今後新たに挑戦してみたいという作品はありますか

Q: You have been successfully exhibiting your artworks at various galleries. What new challenges would you like to take up in the future with respect to your work?

A: 最初の頃は作品発表の機会がほぼなくて苦しい思いをしておりましたが、お陰様で最近は作品発表の機会をたくさん頂いておりまして、本当に感謝しております。年末年始の制作は、今年最初の展覧会となる一月の京都府新鋭選抜展に向けて大作を作っております。大きな香炉の上に龍が乗っている作品で、私としては珍しく、架空の生き物がモチーフです。

A: In the initial stage of my career, I didn’t have many chances to exhibit my artworks. I am very grateful that I’ve recently had many opportunities to exhibit my artworks. I am currently creating a monumental work in preparation for the Kyoto Art for Tomorrow 2020 in January. The artwork is a dragon on top of an incense burner. It is rare for me to create such a fictional creature.

Q: 制作において、最近、力を入れていることは何ですか。

Q: What are you focusing on recently when you create your artworks?

A: 生き物を生き生きと表現したいといつも思っております。生きているものとそうではないものの差は、呼吸しているかしていないかだと考えるようになりまして、最近はそのことを意識しながら制作しています。また、架空の生き物に関しても同様で、実際はいないが、さもいそうな感じにできればと思い、試行錯誤しています。

A: I always want to express lively creatures. I came to believe that the difference between something that is living and something that is not is that living creatures are breathing, so recently I am conscious of this fact when I create my artwork. Also, for fictional creatures, they do not actually exist but I want to create them as if they do actually exist, and this has been a trial and error.

Q: 2020年は、作家としてどのような年にしたいですか。

Q: How would you like the year 2020 to be?

A: 2020年は、作品一点一点に腰を据えて向き合っていきたいです。やはり作品発表の機会が増えると、展覧会の顔になる作品と小さな数物の作品とのクオリティーの差がどうしても大きくなってしまいがちです。展覧会をする上で作品点数が重要なのは確かですが、無理してたくさん作品を作ったところで良くはないので、そこに注意したいと思います。周りのペースに合わせるところは合わせつつ、大事な部分は自分のペースを守りたいと思います。

A: In 2020, I would like to take time to create each artwork. When you have more opportunities to exhibit your artworks, the quality of your artworks between the artworks you exhibit and small artworks naturally differs. The number of artworks is important when holding an exhibition but it’s not a good idea to create many artworks just to meet a specific numerical target. Therefore, I am careful on this point. I would like to maintain my own pace while I stay aligned with other artists.
