Q: What time of the day, in what kind weather and which season do you like to shoot your photographs?   

A: The quality of light itself is more important than any type of weather. The Landscape and Wave Series are most sensitive to overall lighting conditions, preferred usually early morning or late afternoon. The Landscape Series was shot in the autumn, October, taking advantage of the seasonal change of color. I shot during the late afternoon waiting for a bright but overcast sky, ideally with slight humidity. This brought out the luminosity of the colors and made the landscape glow. The Wave Series was shot summer and fall in a narrow window of light of late morning or late afternoon. Both Wave Series and Songs of Light required bright and even direct sunlight to capture the moving reflections of light on the surface of the water. Press to Play is my winter shooting venue where I can play with the energy of light in surrealist space. It is a totally artificial environment unchanging except for relocation of individual games.

Q: Do you have a favorite place you like visit to shoot your photographs?

A: My practice is habitually a study of place and its lighting conditions over a period of time. Every Series of work grew out of fascination that inspired repeated shoots at locations usually within driving distance of my home in Rhode Island. This would allow me to become familiar with and choose the conditions and best time of day for the desired light. The Landscape Series was begun in New York State but evolved into a 20-year study of a small pond in a cemetery in Providence R.I. The Wave Series was begun at a beach in Provincetown, Ma, but pursued for 2 years at Matunick beach and Narragansett cliffs in Rhode Island. Songs of Light was shot over 3 years at a waterfall in Roger William Park near my home.

Q: What fascinates you about photography the most?

A: A constant search, discovery and learning experience of the mystery of light in the world around me.

Q: How do you see your works evolving in the near future?

A: The greatest excitement of being an artist is never knowing where your work will lead you.

Q: Do you have a message to our readers?

A: My hope would be that everyone could set aside some time in his or her lives to explore making some kind of art. I hope my work will help inspire people toward that enjoyment.

A: 天気よりも、光の質そのものが何よりも大切です。「Landscape」と「Wave」のシリーズは、全体的な光の環境に最も敏感なので、早朝または午後の遅い時間に撮影するのが一番好ましいです。「Landscape」のシリーズは、季節の変わり目に風景の色が変わる様子を生かし、秋（10月）に撮影されました。午後の遅い時間に、理想として少し湿気を含む、明るい、どんよりとした空を待ちながら撮影しました。これにより、色彩に光度をもたらし、風景を明るくしてくれました。「Wave」のシリーズは、夏と秋の、朝の遅い時間または午後の遅い時間に、光が差込む短い時間内で撮影しました。「Wave」のシリーズと「Songs of Light」のシリーズはいずれも、水面で動く光の反射を捉えるため、明るい直射日光を必要としました。「Press to Play」のシリーズは、冬に撮影され、超現実的なスペースの中で、光のエネルギーを自由自在に活用することができたのです。それぞれのゲームが違うこと以外は、同様の、完全に人工的な環境で撮影しました。

Q: 写真を撮影するとき、よく行くところはありますか。

A: 私は時間をかけて撮影場所と光の環境を模索していきます。どのシリーズも、魅惑から生まれ、私のロードアイランド州の自宅から運転できる距離にある撮影場所で、繰り返し撮影をしました。これにより、私が求める光が見出せるベストの環境と時間帯を選ぶことができるのです。 「Landscape」のシリーズはニューヨークで始まりましたが、最終的にロードアイランド州プロビデンスにある墓地の小さな池を20年間学習することで進化していったのです。「Wave」のシリーズはマサチューセッツ州プロビンスタウンのビーチから始まり、その後ロードアイランド州のマトゥニック•ビーチとナラガンセット崖で2年間撮影しました。「Songs of Light」のシリーズは、私の自宅の近くのロジャー•ウィリアム公園の滝で3年間撮影されました。

Q: 写真に魅了される理由を教えてください。

A: 自分の周りにある光の神秘性を常に探索し、発見し、学習すること。

Q: ご自分の作品がどのように進化していくだろうと思いますか。

A: アーティストとして一番おもしろいことは、作品が自分をどのように導いてくれるかが、わからないことです。

Q: 読者に方々にメッセージはありますか。

A: 毎日の生活の中で、少しでも何かしらのアートを制作する時間を作ることができればよいと思います。私の作品が、その手助けになれば嬉しいです。
